APRIL 2009

Welcome to a long over due She'll Be Right Records Newsletter. Yes, I am still alive and kicking!

if you are in the southern hemisphere, global warming will be making our coming winter warm and the sea is rising. The un-orchestrated credit crisis will be forcing us on to the streets and the answer - a universal currency is just around the corner. Awaiting in the flanks are our saviour's who have been saving organic seeds in with one hand whilst contaminating the world with poisonous seeds from the other. And apparently we need to embrace GM foods and Gardasil (HPV vaccine) cos it's all good for our health, and won't harm us at all, even tho Gardasil is known to make lab rats sterile. And the same people tryng to force us to consume all this poisonous GM food are telling us we need to reduce our population cos our world is overcrowded.

can anyone see any links happening?

But seriously now folks, let's not fall for ALL the lies and propaganda. The truth is out there if you are willing to let it into your hearts.

On a more positive note, I have been on a break from these newsletters for a while now, but I have been far from stagnant. I've been making music and videos in my new home town of Melbourne. Here's a bunch of new stuff to check out for any of you who are interested.

September 2008

Hi everyone! Jody here…

I reckon She'll Be Right has got some pretty cool things going on at the moment. There's a worldwide spoken word/poetry renaissance going on and we might be at the forefront in bringing it into the New Zealand music scene.

I am currently back in Christchurch for two key events:

At 2pm on Saturday 6th Sept, I am one of three music people speaking on a forum panel at the 'insiders guide to song writing' as part of the Christchurch Writers Festival at the Dux De Lux in Christchurch.

Following that I head down to Al's Bar to perform along side some of my She'll Be Right pals for the LAUNCH PARTY gig for our new CD: The Original Branch Manual – catalyst 7...

The Press Christchurch Writers Festival presents:

Jim Christy – Gods Little Angle (Lp)

475_JIMCHRISTYgodslittleangle200

is now out… I'm not attempting a crappy car salesman pitch here, this album is truly a not to be missed gem! God's Little Angle is possibly the most unique and well put together spoken word album you will ever hear come out of
New Zealand. This LP is like no other music/poetry production. God's Little Angle is a blend of gritty spoken word dialogue and dirty, earthy, jazz, blues and eclectic electronically fused music.

MARCH 2008

Hi Lucky People...

I hate long and boring newsletters as much as the next person. That’s why I don’t write a blog. And that’s why this newsletter is quite exciting, right down to the last link...

SHE’LL BE RIGHT RECORDS:
it’s gonna be a busy year for She’ll Be Right. A bunch of exciting new projects, artists and releases....

The BIG one is Canadian based writer and poet, JIM CHRISTY. Over the last year I’ve had the pleasure to produce an exciting album of spoken word and music with Jim called GOD’S LITTLE ANGLE. The album is set for release in New Zealand, Australia, Canada and USA in first quarter of 2008. More info and music links in the next newsletter...
Read more:
JIM CHRISTY BIO

JOHN WHITE: the Mogwash cd has finally officially been released in NZ after it's release in USA on Last Visible Dog.
review: 'On the strength of this CD I have no idea why John White isn’t huge yet. His songs are at once finely crafted examples of credible song-writing, while also being accessible enough to have the potential to become really popular. For those who enjoy the more gentle forms of dream-pop folk I couldn’t recommend this album enough...' READ MORE

ED HILLARY TRIBUTE SONG:

Sadly we lost one of our great heroes this year, and I wrote a tribute song. If you have missed out on the youtube/ed hillary excitement, then you must be living under a rock. The song has had over 21000 views on youtube and was on TV1 News, Nightline, Newstalk ZB, More FM, The Edge, Kiwi FM, 91ZM, Life FM and had a small article in the ChCh Press. It’s also been picked up to open the www.mountainfilm.org Festival in Colorado, USA in May.

NEW TRILLION ALBUM ‘SILENTinvisible’:
This summer, Jody Lloyd is TRILLION BRANSON, suspected El Quadi terrorist, rapper and son of illegitimate father, Sir Richard Branson. TRILLION disappeared for two years, his friends thought he had died. One day he arrived back in his hometown wearing a scruffy beard and a few scars. Unlike his trillion-heir father, he only had a few possessions; old clothes, books, some scratched records and tattered journal of his own writings. For the next three years TRILLION set about turning his experience into an audio movie called SILENTinvisible. 32 musical guests including international rappers and a narrator...

REVIEW QUOTES:
'lush melodies... down-home grooves, but this is an album that is crammed full of words... an hour-long sonic carnival. Poetry, electronica, rap, back-shed acoustic folk and pop are all thrown together – and as always it is a cohesive, subversive underground sound. The major bonus is it also happens to be clever, accessible and easy to like.’ Simon Sweetman for DOMINION POST

'Lloyd is a vastly under-rated talent with an originality that defies belief. Astoundingly here, he has managed to create something unthinkable...' Vicki Anderson for CHCH PRESS

The CD comes in a limited run, handmade manila folder dossier...  and is OUT NOW In all good record stores across New Zealand.

Hello Humans and others,
it's been a while since the last newsletter and much has happened… feel free to skim read, as this is quite full.
but i expect my close friends to read each word!

THROWING SHAPES - band/concert

Recently I (Jody) was involved in a Concert at the Chch Arts Festival with 7 other nice music people, i also made a radio program
on it. those in New Zealand - don't miss National Radio this Saturday 25th 4:10pm: Musical Chairs - Throwing Shapes (25 minutes)

programme produced by myself...

blurb:
One of the most anticipated events at the Christchurch Arts Festival this year was the one-off 'Throwing Shapes' concert. The
band consists of Christchurch musicians Matt Barus (The Dukes), Flip Grater, Lauren Michell, Tim Chesney, Jody Lloyd, Adam
Mcgrath and others. Throwing Shapes is unique because all eight musicians perform together on stage, playing each others'
acoustic folk, blues, country and soul-tinged songs. Most songs were written specifically for the concert. This programme is a
fly-on-the-wall experience of the project, from practices and group dynamics, through to the live performance in a big marquee
in Cathedral Square, Christchurch

SHE'LL BE RIGHT RECORDS NEWS, august 2007:
a few new albums have been released in the last month or so...

RAGAMUFFIN CHILDREN – Werecat Lullabies

Review from Real Groove magazine - 4 stars
All but unknown in the North but progressively making waves in their Christchurch home, Ragamuffin Children are a genuine curio.
Based around core duo Anita Clark and Brooke Singer, they're the kind of outfit you'd like to start 'There must be something in the
water in...' articles about, if that was more than a signifier for 'band uses hi-hats'.  They invoke more ambitious touchstones than
a lot of local folksters.

Clark's reedy voice, all whistled ess-es and precocious crackle, conjures up Jolie Holland, Bjork and even
Joanna Newsom.  Her voice sustains a set of songs that usually give her a little spectral breathing room before ushering in gusts
of woodwind, dramatic piano and guitar thrum.  It's played straight and stays melodic, but it's also deftly engineered, rarely brash
or cloying.  Instrumentally, at least - things get a little too po-faced on anti-war lament Bullets, but the forebodingly-titled Ivory
Tower actually turns out to be one of the group's most euphorically pretty moments - even when it's lifting chord progressions from
the less than euphoric Leonard Cohen.  Neither as precious or light-hearted as their packaging might suggest, Ragamuffin Children
have created a surprisingly affecting and refreshingly brief work here. By Joe Nunweek

Andy Gibson

ANDY GIBSON - Behind the I

"This is Andy Gibson's promising debut, 10 tracks of acoustic guitar, piano, strings and some programmed beats, which, combined
with his heartfelt vocals, is sure to give Greg Johnson a run for his money." - CheeseOnToast.com

Andy Gibson is an Auckland based singer / songwriter of depth and sincerity. His voice is compelling and beautiful, and has a
distinctively New Zealand character. Andy's music blends melodic pop/rock with strands of electronica and folk. His influences
are Death Cab For Cutie, Neil Finn, Radiohead, Bright Eyes and Jeff Buckley, while lyrically, Andy's songs tackle human issues,
personal and global struggles.

Behind The I was recorded between Andy's home studio and The Lab Studios. Cousin Sam Gibson (sound engineer for Neil Finn
and Dave Dobbyn) mixed the album in the UK and mastering was done by Chris Winchcombe at York St. Studios.
Musicians featured on the album come from many corners of NZ's music scene: Tui nominee Charmaine Ford on piano;
Stephen Thomas (Spacifix) on drums; Dylan Storey on electric guitars and harmonies by Reb Fountain...

Phil Johns

PHIL JOHNS – Illusion Fades Away

This is gloriously affecting NZ indie pop which invites comparisons with Neil Young, Paul Simon or Bonnie "Prince" Billy...
You haven't yet heard the name? That's OK, Phil Johns is a bit of an enigma to most of us, even his friends.
The NZ singer / songwriter crafts beautiful indie pop songs that are simple and catchy.
In '06 Phil he came back to NZ to record his debut "dream" album. He tracked most of the songs in Wellington and then sent
them down to Jody Lloyd in Christchurch to work on and add extra players and sounds. 'Illusion Fades Away' is the fruit of
the pair's labours and it is something quite unlike any album you may have ever heard from NZ.

Reviewer: Michelle Piko (cd baby) five star album album!
I don't know anything about Phil Johns so i'm reviewing this purely for it's musical merits. The first few tracks are a little hard
to get into (1) because of phil's unusual voice and (2) the songs are a little bit cheese. But once I had warmed into his style the
rest of the album just kicks. Awesome production, so simple, but so much going on. Whoever produced and mixed this are very
clever, everything fits together perfectly. The genre is hard to pin point, it's a little folk, blues, country and often tinges of 70's
rock, funk and things like the doobie brothers. instruments are all live and include lap steel, banjo's, whistles, and array of
guitars and percussion. and an awesome harmonica solo in So Amazing. Highlights for me are: Come into my Frame,
We All Win, So Amazing, Roots, The Grand Illusion, Wake Up, Copland Valley. there are so many good songs here it's hard
to pick a favourite!

MAY - NZ MUSIC MONTH:

LIE LIE LIE a track from Audio Agriculture hits No.1 on Kiwi Fm.

18th MAY - Trillion Band play the Dux De Lux in christchurch, nz

----------------------------------------------

February saw the official release of AUDIO AGRICULTURE IN THE
21st CENTURY,
a full length album full of remixes and instrumental music produced by myself.

Instead of trying to do new versions of lame hip hop or dance tunes, I
decided to go a few better and remix things that are actually quite
good. And they are mainly guitar based things – that includes acoustic
guitar.

The album features remixes of (in tracklist order), The Bats, Flip
Grater, Billy Wilson, Onelung, Mea (Amiria Grenell), Trillion & Wayne
Lotek, Trillion, SJD, Moscati, John White, The Undercurrents and Vorn.
As far as I know it hasn't been reviewed anywhere, but there are a few
good things come from it which would suggest it's pretty cool.

1. It was album of the week on KIWI FM, so if you listen in
you can hear it and even win it. see http://www.kiwifm.co.nz for more
info.

2. The remix of JOHN WHITE - 'float on a feather' is featured on an ad
for how cool Christchurch is, even though he's not even from
Christchurch. See it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tp2aK1fls6M

3. THE BATS remix got to NO. 1 on the KIWI FM top ten chart.

Pretty good start...
you can buy the album in shops or a few places online:
for $16.95 here: http://www.smokecds.com/cd/41449 cheap cheap!
for $14 here: http://www.thekiwidiary.co.nz/cd.html when you buy a Kiwi Diary
and you can listen to some tracks at both of the above links.
www.myspace.com/trilli0n and also at myspace...

If there's a time to buy this excellent CD – it's now!
---------------------------------------
in other NEWS...  or rather things to look forward to in the future.

The new TRILLION album (yet to be named) is looking due for release
in, let's say June. Two years in the making, it has just a few
finishing touches to make it complete. It's mainly poetry/rap and
features a swag of the best musos around, along side a handful of
international guest rap poets. to hear a medely of a few new tracks
see: www.myspace.com/trilli0n

I also have the pleasure of co-producing world renowned writer and
poet, JIM CHRISTY's new album. See:
http://www.earshot-online.com/reviews/DisplayReview.cfm?DiscID=371 for
a review of his 2002 debut album 'A Night in Grombalia'.

This year She'll Be Right Records is planning releases by
Trillion,
Mustard,
John White,
Le Mot Cafe,
Jeremy Taylor,
The Trillion Band (who are changing their name),
a controversial hit single by St Lucy
and possibly a Phil Johns album...
and other stuff in the pipeline yet to be confirmed.

There's too much good stuff to stop now...
give us your dollars and we'll keep 'em coming.

last year.......

TRILLION

OLD TRILLION LP:
well, it's not too old but it has been a slow crawl to get The Gray Between Shadow and Shade into the media arena. But there have been a few results. 3 tracks from the album have been used in the Air NZ in-flight entertainment for the last few months.  Also music from the album was featured on the winning Christchurch entry for the 48 Hours Film Competition – THE ESCORT. And the first (self funded) music video from the album has been completed...

THE TRILLION VIDEO
we dressed up as characters from a wild west film and shot an excellent music video incorporating the Weka Pass Railway and the hills around Frog Rock/Waikari in North Canterbury. video here soon

NEW TRILLION LP:
some great international collaborations happening at the moment, as I work on my next album. – it's going to be a natural accent rap bonanza with excellent guests from UK, USA and Australia!

THE TRILLION BAND:
the new Trillion band is in formation and shaping up to be an excellent Summer of gigs and festivals, our first gig being The Mussel Inn (takaka) on 22nd Sept. Line up: Jody Lloyd (vocals, turntable), Rick Harvie (drums), Rich Densem (bass), Sam Hopley (guitar, vocals), & Mark Duff (synth).

SHE'LL BE RIGHT RECORDS

BILLY WILSON:
Featured in the latest Back 2 Basics hip hop mag, Billy is a rap poet from Wellington. last year we released his album with a successful tour in Australia, and finally released the LP (to great reviews) here at home. This album took 2 years to make and is a musical/lyrical masterpiece.

LINDON PUFFIN:
the success of his road movie/doco on C4 and in cinemas a few months back came around the same time as the film was released on dvd. With the dvd comes a bonus disc featuring the soundtrack with music by Trillion and Lindon Puffin. It's a worthy piece of NZ music/film to own. Find it here: www.lindonpuffin.co.nz

LE MOT CAFE:
Arose from grave of The Puffins. They are currently putting finishing touches on their brand new LP.
