Kicking NZ Music Month off in style is Lindon Puffin's multimedia, spoken word performance of the film 'Figure 8000'. Voted "Best show at the Dux de Lux 2004" by the Christchurch Press, 'Figure 8000' is a feature length road movie/documentary of Puffin's record setting, 108-night non-stop tour of Godzone!
In support of the release of his debut album ('Stuff like That' - 2003), Puffin set off on a mammoth figure 8 journey of the country that would eventually cover 8000km from Stewart Island to Kaitaia. Having fronted successful rock band The Puffins during the mid nineties, this tour was aimed at the smaller towns and backwaters that so often miss out on touring original music.
Joining Puffin for the duration of the tour was experienced freelance documentary maker Rick Harvie. Harvie aimed to document both the realities of life on the road for a struggling independent musician while also capturing the many incidental and offbeat encounters that would no doubt occur along the way. As it turned out, there were an abundance of these.
From eccentric personalities and well known artists to hardened locals and poetry reading politicians. There were great shows, crap shows, no shows, Puffin even ended up in a Northland Hospital with a swollen liver! A suspected case of hepatitis that turned out to be a combination of extreme fatigue, mineral deficiencies and maybe a little too much 'rock n roll'.
In fact, Harvie's documentary very nearly ended up as a four-part series on TV. However after being thoroughly rinsed through the wringer of compromise and negotiation, Puffin and Harvie realised that if any real representation of events were to be produced, they'd just have to bite the bullet and create it themselves. And thus..
'The Really Real Tour' has now become, 'Figure 8000'. A 2-hour documentary that tells it like it is. The good with the evil, the laughter with the frustration. Beautiful road footage mixed with porn, poetry, interviews, live shows and an old woman dragging a brick up the beach.
But this will be a screening with a difference. The Auckland - Odeon Lounge showing of 'Figure 8000' will be performed live!
But what does that mean and how will it work? The full documentary will be projected onto a big screen complete with interviews and incidental commentary. On one side of the stage an original soundtrack will be DJ'd and performed by hip hop legend Jody Lloyd (Dark Tower/Trillion), while on the other, Lindon Puffin will provide live spoken-word narration, accompanied by the occasional song on guitar.
